Quebec City, the capital of Quebec, is a historic and charming city known for its French-speaking culture, cobblestone streets and well-preserved fortifications. It’s one of the oldest cities in North America, founded by the French in 1608, and retains a strong European feel. We opted to stay outside the old city but we spent most of our time within the walls. The heat wave finally broke when we arrived so it was much more enjoyable walking around the lovely old city.

Poutine is a Quebec original that has become something akin to the national dish. Basically it is French fries, cheese curds topped with hot brown gravy. It sounds awful and it rather looks awful, but I had to try it (Joe wouldn’t even have a taste). I don’t need it again but I didn’t mind it with a few additions.

The Hotel – Musee Premieres Nations has a great reputation and we wanted to dine here, as it specialized in native dishes. However, a wedding had it totally booked. We still had a drink at the bar to soak up the atmosphere.
The photo on the right is part of the small Huron-Wendat Museum within the hotel, and dedicated to the history, culture, and arts of the Wendat and other First Nations.

Finally found some quiet time (and two spare devices) to follow your epic journey with a map to accompany your great travelogue summary, M & J.
What a fabulous trip, not only exploring so much of North America but catching up with so many old friends in far-flung places. Some great memories for you to cherish ( esp your time with Ritchie? just before he passed away).
You have whet my appetite for more exploration in that area. Pat has ancestors who came from Canada ( Toronto I think) to Australia during the golf rush in the 1850s.
Our son Simon is heading to Montana on Monday with his family of 4 to ski somewhere there and they’ll call by Denver to catch up with my nephew who married the Denver girl. They live in Cherry Creek in Denver.
Happy New Year to you both and long may your shared good health and fitness allow you to travel and enjoy life to its fullest!
